Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) – a Manual for our Minds

NLPWhat is NLP?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a method for modelling excellence in order to help us improve areas of our life where we want to see a positive change.  By excellence, we mean the natural responses (traits & behaviours) used by people who produce highly successful results in any given task/role/sport etc.

Let’s take a step back and look at how our natural responses and behaviours are formed in the first place.

From the moment we are born, our senses are exposed to images, sounds, tactile feelings, smells and tastes (this is the ‘Neuro’ in NLP).

As we naturally process the neurological information we are exposed to, we begin to assign meaning and language to it (this is the ‘Linguistic’ in NLP).

Finally, we use the meaning and language to form our behavioural response.  It’s important to recognise that our own response can be very different to another persons’ response to the same situation.

NLP provides a method, or manual, for changing our default behavioural response ... in order to produce a better outcome (this is the ‘Programming’ in NLP).  All we need to do is to learn how to do it!

What areas of our lives can NLP help us transform?

Just think for a moment how powerful this could be.  We could use the NLP mind manual in order to work towards ‘excellence’ – that’s excellence as defined by us – you and me.

This will look different for everyone, but it might include:

  • More effective communication
  • Improved relationships
  • A better appreciation of differences
  • More well-formed goals and tools to support higher achievements
  • A calmer and more helpful response in challenging situations
  • Better management of stress
  • A sense of having more control over one’s life

Can you see how an improvement in any of the above areas might help you become a more successful version of you?  At home?  And at work?

Why might we not be getting the results we want out of life?

There is very often a disconnect between what we want to happen in life and what actually ends up happening:

“We might think we are “ordering up” more money, a happy, healthy relationship, peace with our family members, and being able to stick to a healthy diet…but unless that’s what’s showing up, then something is probably getting lost in translation”

(Excerpt taken from http://www.nlp.com)

Whilst our conscious mind might be expecting success, our unconscious mind is responding in a way that’s not conducive to success – it’s creating behaviours based on what might be our flawed, biased or pre-supposed interpretation of information - and this can have a negative effect on the outcome.  The two parts of our mind – the conscious and unconscious are not necessarily working together to produce a desired result.  With NLP the two can be trained to work in harmony.

NLP empowers us to respond differently – to choose more helpful responses which allows us to make positive changes in our lives.
