An ILM Level 5 in Executive Coaching for Roselle
After a considerable amount of hard work over the past couple of years, our Client Experience Manager Roselle has just completed her ILM Level 5 Certificate in Executive Coaching.
We asked her to tell us a bit more about her ILM journey and here's what she had to say:
Why did you decide to do the training?
"I’ve always been a ‘learner’ and I love furthering my knowledge and understanding. I joined Crisp because I am passionate about education, in all forms, and have a genuine interest in supporting people to be their best and get the best from others. Learning more about coaching as a facilitation method and as a one-to-one professional support service, through my role here at Crisp, gave me the enthusiasm to study it and gain a qualification – mostly out of curiosity and interest in the subject but also to see what opportunities and benefits it might open up for me and for Crisp"
What did you have to do and over what time period?
"There were 3 residential training modules, in Surrey: 3 days in September 2016, 2 in November 2016 and 2 in January 2017.
I then had to complete 12 hours of 1-2-1 coaching with 3 clients, documenting my journey and learning from this whilst taking part in regular group and co-supervision calls reflecting on my performance.
I had a practical/observed coaching session and had to compete a reflective portfolio about my practical experience as well as 3 assignments. The portfolio and assignment submission totalled just shy of 150 pages and 40,000 words"
How did you find the course?
"Intense! The residential training courses were jam-packed with information; theories, models, food for thought, practical exercises; and I met some fantastic and inspiring people from all different backgrounds.
There were lots of opportunities to practice coaching and have coaching conversations in all forms. Whilst I am a talker and have had many professional and performance conversations in my career, I was surprised at how difficult it was to have a coaching conversation - I particularly found it difficult to stop myself from talking! Only when I really started to listen properly did I realise how poorly I listen usually - it has been a great lesson to me professionally and in day to day life.
The practical coaching with real clients was nerve-wracking - working with professional people that I didn’t already know and keen to deliver to them a positive and worthwhile experience. I really learned a lot and could feel my skills and confidence developing with each session. I worked with business owners and leaders in sectors I had no prior knowledge of, which helped me to put my faith in the process of coaching and my skills and not rely on outside knowledge.
Juggling a professional qualification with a young family and a full-time job was hard work, but I was determined to complete the qualification, particularly as Crisp had supported me with my professional development"
How do you intend to use it?
"I am already finding that I am using it on a daily basis – in the way I talk to and listen to friends and family and, professionally, it has given me a much better understanding of how coaching works, what the impact can be and how we can use it to develop people, so when I’m speaking to clients I can be much more detailed about the power of coaching and it’s uses. And I’m enjoying spending my time reading further in to different techniques, theories and case studies.
In the future, I hope that I can continue to build my experience; supporting our existing coaches with facilitation and offering 1-2-1 coaching for our clients"
Who else would this training be of benefit to?
"Anyone who has an interest in developing people and getting the best out of others, anyone with an interest in behavioural psychology, neuroscience and emotional intelligence and anyone who would like to be able to talk less and listen more!!"
Huge congratulations from all of us at Crisp to Roselle for committing to and completing her ILM qualification!
