Delegation - 3 ways to do it better (read full article)
If you manage a team, your performance can be greatly improved by your proficiency in the art of delegation.
Be wary of falling into the trap of thinking that you don't have the time to delegate and that it's just quicker to do it yourself - think instead of the long term benefits of having specific tasks removed from your to-do list - but also consider the ways in which effective delegation could benefit those you delegate to - building trust, motivation and new skills.
Here are 3 ways you can improve your delegation skills:
1. Provide constant feedback:
Regular feedback is going to keep the person you're delegating to motivated whilst also keeping their performance of the task on track. Keeping an open dialogue will mean you can correct any glitches at the point at which they occur, whilst also giving you the opportunity to praise the individual on a job well done when appropriate
2. Give clear instructions:
Without a full and detailed brief things can quickly go wrong. From the outset the task, the desired outcome and the timeline must be communicated in full, so that there is no opportunity for misinterpretation or missed deadlines
3. Delegate the right things:
Think carefully about which tasks you're going to delegate. It makes sense, if you're going to invest your time training someone how to do a task, to delegate a recurring task, a detailed (time consuming) task, or a task that is going to help an individual develop their own skills for the future
