Essential Management skills for Managers and Supervisors at MDDC

Mid Devon District Council

We were contacted in 2016 by Mid Devon District Council as they wanted to create a modular leadership and management development programme that catered for all of their managers and supervisors across the organisation.

They were keen to ensure that all managers, regardless of which department they worked in or how long they had been in post, received professional training and development to equip them with essential management skills.

After an initial discussion with the Head of HR and the Learning and Development Manager, we put forward a number of options for how this could be delivered. A key requirement was to offer a programme that could be flexible to different working days and absences, yet ensure that every manager and supervisor were able to attend these mandatory sessions.

The favoured option was to select a number of the courses that we currently deliver as open training courses, to build a ‘package’ that would combine key management skills and theory. Each one-day course would run for 6 sessions across 6 weeks (30 sessions in total), to enable staff on different working patterns the opportunity to find a session that they could attend. Their chosen courses were:

  • Supervision Skills
  • Leading your Team and Raising the Bar
  • Coaching and Mentoring Skills for Managers
  • Performance Conversations
  • Dealing with difficult people and negativity

The courses were delivered by several different trainers – bringing a variety of facilitation styles and specialist expertise to the programme. By selecting courses that we already run regularly at our Exeter training suite, they had added flexibility, since any new starters or anyone who missed a session was able to catch up by attending the same course here in Exeter.

The training programme began in May 2016 and ran through until November 2016.

All trainers were provided with a full brief, details of the management structure and the context for development.  Where necessary, additional meetings between the client and the trainer were held to ensure understanding of internal procedures (for example ‘Performance Conversations’ with reference to the appraisal process).

Throughout the programme, a Crisp Professional Development account manager remained in touch with the client and online evaluations were conducted after each module and shared with the client.  Here are some of the comments we received from the managers and supervisors:

"I have enjoyed these sessions very much and I am pleased all managers were included. I am enthusiastic and excited about the future, I believe we are moving in the right direction and I have confidence in our leadership team"

"I thoroughly enjoyed all the courses, I have learnt a great deal and have managed to try new things with the team. The team are definitely more motivated and enjoy their work"

"The trainers were engaging and interesting. There were useful exercises that can be used with the team. The subject areas were relevant"

Since the training was deemed to be so successful, Mid Devon District Council have chosen to partner with us again for the next 2 years to ensure that as many of their team members as possible can access this training.
